Bears in the Woods is a University of California Alumni Association club serving the Reno, Lake Tahoe and Truckee area. The club was chartered in 1997. There were 176 members in 2006. The club annually mails to approximately 2,600 alums in the area. The primary mission of the club is fundraising for its scholarship program, in addition to providing the opportunity for members and guests to socialize at various events each year. Each spring the club selects a recipient to receive a scholarship annually while they attend Cal. To date, the club has sponsored nine students, including one varsity rower and two Golden Overtone singers.
Bears in the Woods typically has three or four events each year ... one held in Reno, a summer picnic at the lake, and a Big Game rally at Gar Woods, on the lake, in Carnelian Bay. Past activities in Reno have included evenings at the Nevada Museum of Art and the National Automobile Museum. The annual summer picnic is held at beautiful Sand Harbor on Lake Tahoe. The Big Game rally is always held at Gar Woods, owned by Tom Turner. For the past several years, the local Stanford Alumni Club has joined in the festivities, and a good time is had by all. The Lake Tahoe ax is presented to the prior year’s winner by the vanquished. Thousands of dollars raised from that event have been contributed to local schools. At each of the Bears in the Woods’ events, we have been privileged to have a speaker of note entertain the group, many of whom are professors from the Cal teaching staff, past sports figures or local members like Bruce James, President Bush’s appointee to head the National Printing Office or Ray Huffstutler, former CIA Executive Director.
The club also has its own Bears in the Woods logo’d line of apparel and miscellaneous items from license plate frames to baseball caps to fleece vests.
